Economists from fossil-fuel importing countries give high priority to energy transition – survey

Clean Energy Wire

A majority of economists from countries that are net importers of fossil fuels give high priority to the energy transition, whereas experts from net exporters consider it less important, according to a survey by the Institute for Economic Research (ifo). “Especially in Germany, Netherlands and Sweden do the respondents regard the energy transition to be important for their energy policy,” ifo said in its February edition of the World Economic Survey (in English), a quarterly publication. A clear majority of all respondents (71%) said their government should give higher priority to promoting an energy transition.

Economists are roughly split on whether the energy transition has made progress in their countries since the Paris Climate Agreement. Half of respondents believe it is unlikely that governments will act together and reduce climate change, whereas about a third considered a positive development likely, according to ifo.
