Wind and hydro power generate enough electricity for all German households in 2018

The combined electricity generation of wind turbines (111 terawatt-hours (TWh)) and hydro power (17 TWh) in 2018 equalled the electricity consumption of all German households (estimated at 129 TWh in 2016 and 2017), Peter Vollmer calculated for an article in Handelsblatt Edison. However, this example, although highlighting the increasing role of renewable power sources in the German electricity mix, is only a “numbers game”, since renewables couldn't cover household power consumption at every hour of the day. The total share of renewable power (including solar PV and biogas) in German net power generation connected to the national grid was at 40 percent in 2018.
