Tension between Russia and Ukraine puts Nord Stream 2 in spotlight

Handelsblatt

The looming escalation of an armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia has reinvigorated critics of the planned Russian-German natural gas pipeline project Nord Stream 2, Kathrin Witsch writes in the Handelsblatt. “This is not a good development,” commented Thielo Wieland of Wintershall, a German oil and gas company involved in the pipeline consortium. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo renewed his administration’s declared aim to stop the pipeline project during a recent visit to Ukraine, as Washington fears that Nord Stream 2 in the Baltic Sea will bypass the country’s territory for Russian-German gas trade. The US State Department said plans for Nord Stream 2 had to be reconsidered given Ukraine’s precarious situation.
