German Greens thrive in backlash to right wing-conservative push
New York Times
As a turn towards conservative and right-wing politics appears to dominate the political agenda in Germany and elsewhere in the world, the German Green Party suddenly dashes from one election victory to another, Katrin Bennhold writes in the New York Times. “Once an environmental protest movement, the Green Party is now the second most popular party in the country,” she says. According to party co-leader Robert Habeck, the Greens are “anti-populists” who do not want to let right-wing movements like Germany’s AfD define what the traditional German values are. “Today, many voters see the Greens as a party that has matured while remaining true to its principles. They are pro-environment, pro-Europe, and unapologetically pro-immigration,” Bennhold writes.
