CLEW Masterclass: What is at stake in energy and climate in Germany's election
For more than ten years, the CLEW newsroom has reported the ins and outs of German climate and energy policymaking, with a close eye on many national, state and EU elections.
On 29 January 2025, our newsroom journalists will hold a masterclass, laying out the relevant debates ahead of the February vote, presenting tips & tricks on how to keep track of the dynamics before and right after the vote.
Participants will have the chance to ask questions on the topics they are researching for stories in the run-up to this crucial election: what to expect from a possible chancellor Friedrich Merz; what role will a strong far-right play for the ultimate government coalition; and will the Greens be the political force advancing climate action in the next government? Will Germany's next government be a driver of ambitious EU climate policy? What will it do to support the country's ailing car industry in transition? What happens to the controversial law to phase out fossil fuel heating, and is there going to be a nuclear energy renaissance?

SPEAKERS
Carolina Kyllmann is a staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. She likes to delve into emerging stories in the climate and energy sphere. For CLEW, she covers climate adaptation, the construction sector, and the future electricity system. She believes in journalism as a public service, and when not reporting, she leads the effort to continuously improve CLEW's digital presence.
Sören Amelang is a staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. He focuses on the shift to clean mobility, industry decarbonisation, and the role of hydrogen. He also keeps a watchful eye on general company efforts and claims to become climate-friendly. Before joining CLEW in 2015, he covered international business, econom-ics and politics for Reuters.
Julian Wettengel is a staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. He has been reporting on Germany's and Europe's transition to climate neutrality for more than eight years. With beats ranging from gas and geopolitics to German and international climate policy, he has covered several COP climate change conferences and has been on reporting trips to the U.S., Norway, and various EU member states. Drawing on his previous experience as an assistant to a lawmaker in the European Parliament, Julian has helped CLEW build up its EU portfolio of offers, including the weekly "Dispatch from…" newsletter.
Benjamin Wehrmann is staff Correspondent for Clean Energy Wire. He mainly covers sectors that Germany wants to join (renewables), plans to exit from (coal) or has already left behind (nuclear) – and everything in between. Benjamin started out as a reporter covering politics and business at news agencies AFP and dpa in Germany and France and has worked for both nationwide and niche media outlets. For CLEW, he has climbed wind turbines, entered nuclear storage facilities and even visited ‘lunar landscapes’ in former coal mining areas to bring Germany’s energy transition closer to the rest of the world.
