The EU is about to enter a crucial phase for the future shape of the European Green Deal. More than 360 million citizens can cast their ballot in the 2024 EU elections on 6-9 June. Their vote can shift the balance of power in the European Parliament and help define the union's climate ambition in the years that remain to reach the 2030 targets. CLEW alongside journalists from France, Poland and the union's unofficial capital Brussels will analyse the role of climate in the vote and what it means for Europe's Green Deal future. Everyone is invited to this one-hour press club event. [New: Adds link to video recording]

The 2019 European Parliament elections that set the stage for the Green Deal came after a summer of heatwaves and powerful protests by the Fridays for Future movement. The spotlight was firmly on climate policy, leading to a “green wave” of election victories for environmental parties. In reaction, the EU pledged to reach climate neutrality by 2050 and put the Green Deal at the heart of its efforts.

Now, in 2024, the EU is deep in the implementation phase – after years of crisis management first due to the pandemic and then to the war against Ukraine, the consequences of which have also toned down enthusiasm for decisive climate legislation across the continent. Yet, most polls also show that a majority of citizens want governments and the EU to do more to stem the climate crisis.

So, what will the eventual election outcome mean for energy and climate policy in Europe? Join us on the day after the votes are cast for the first CLEW Press Club on Monday, 10 June 2024. Three expert reporters from France, Italy and Poland will be analysing the role energy and climate issues played in the national campaigns, allowing journalist and non-journalist viewers alike to make sense of the election outcomes all across the EU, and to discuss the ensuing formation of the European Commission.
