Storm Yulia sets new record in German wind power

dpa / Der Spiegel

A major storm this weekend set a new record in German wind power production, newswire dpa reports in an article carried by Der Spiegel. The utility E.ON reported that a record 46.2 gigawatts (GW) of wind power were fed into the German power grid during the storm Yulia on Saturday evening, beating the previous record of 45.5 GW in March 2019, dpa reports. That compares with an average of 18 GW of wind power fed into the grid in 2018, the article says, citing the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE). Overall, European wind power generation hit a record for the second week in a row, averaging 88 GW last week, the market analysis firm S&P Global reported.

Germany also hit a new record for total renewable energy generation last week: more than 69 percent of the country’s net electricity generation came from renewables, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems reported. Wind energy accounted for more than 55 percent of that, dpa reports.

In early February, the storm Ciara (also called Sabine) also led to high wind power production, but strong gusts forced operators to shut down some turbines, dpa reports.
