Climate concern could lead to Green chancellor in Germany – media

Growing concern over global warming in Germany has seen the Green party rise to record popularity in polls, and made a Green chancellor a real possibility, Madeline Chambers writes for news agency Reuters. “The advantage for the Greens is they own the issue of climate change, which is a long-term problem,” Heinrich Oberreuter, professor of politics at Passau University, told Reuters.
After their best-ever result at the European elections in May, the Greens – under the leadership of Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck – have soared in national polls, overtaking Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing CDU to become the most popular party in one June poll.
