German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp plans to phase out CO₂-intensive coke-based steel production and replace it with a hydrogen-based process by 2050, Kevin Knitterscheidt reports for Handelsblatt. “It is industry’s job to ensure it’s doing share for climate protection,” Andreas Goss, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG, told Handelsblatt. He said the company had a “timetable for switching to hydrogen-based steel production” and wants to invest 10 billion euros over the next 30 years in modernising production processes and replacing coke. Steel production is responsible for almost a third of greenhouse gas emissions from German industry, Handelsblatt says.
