German federal states mull compensation claims against carmakers

At least two German federal states are considering legal action against carmakers for compensation because the dieselgate scandal has devalued much of their vehicle fleets. “The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), for example, operates several thousand diesel vehicles in the police fleet. This is why we must consider compensation claims against the makers of the state’s diesel vehicles,” NRW justice minister Peter Biesenbach (CDU) told regional newspaper Rheinische Post. A spokesperson for Baden-Württemberg’s finance ministry told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the state planned a claim against VW because it was a “budgetary obligation”.
