Germany’s economy is particularly sensitive to the effects of climate change in other regions of the globe because it is heavily dependent on exports, according to the country’s Federal Environment Agency (UBA). The agency’s first analysis of climate change effects on Germany’s international trading links shows that economic risks from impacts abroad will be at least as large as those stemming from the consequences within Germany. “Impacts in other regions of the world can also cause considerable economic damage here - for example, if extreme weather events damage infrastructures and trade routes, impair agricultural production or even destroy entire harvests,” said UBA president Maria Krautzberger.
