Grid operator warns rapid coal exit could threaten Germany’s supply security

Germany must be careful to “not overstep the mark” on supply security when deciding on the process of phasing out coal-fired power production, Boris Schucht, CEO of grid operator 50 Hertz, told Handelsblatt. If there is no clear scenario on the construction of new natural gas plants or other assured capacity in the country, “we will enter a situation that is very difficult to predict,” Schuch argued. However, once adequate precautions have been made, “there is quite some leeway regarding the roadmap for a coal exit,” he added.
