Merkel will leave vacuum in climate negotiations when her Chancellorship is over – commentary
Social Europe
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision not to run for re-election will create a vacuum in international negotiations on global warming, writes Michael Davies-Venn in a commentary on Social Europe. “Scientific environmental analysis is no longer as necessary to resolve climate change as is unrelenting and courageous political will. Sadly, in about two years’ time when Merkel quits national politics, the world will be left wanting for a political leader on international climate politics,” he writes. While Merkel was “certainly no climate saint”, she “provides sound leadership on international climate talks,” as was shown by her actions after US President Donald Trump announced he would pull his country out of the Paris Climate Agreement, writes Davies-Venn.
