The rise in emissions from passenger cars in Germany shows that “the diesel strategy has been pointless for the climate,” Spiegel Online reports. The efficiency gains in diesel technology that carmakers used as an argument to convince policymakers to support this strategy were completely offset by heavier cars that resulted in a net increase in emissions, the article says. The number of diesel cars in the country rose from 11 to 15 million over eight years and the average car engine just became much more powerful instead of more thrifty.
