Update: CLEW has compiled a list of contacts for journalists ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Katowice (COP24).

Against the backdrop of the upcoming COP24 climate conference in Poland, the Clean Energy Wire is inviting journalists to a media study tour that takes a closer look at how Poland is dealing with the political, economic and social implications of creating a climate-friendly economy.
During the four-day study tour we will talk to government ministers and policy-makers, journalists, business leaders and energy policy experts, meet anti-pollution activists and clean energy innovators, visit companies investing in electric mobility and discuss the future of Poland’s energy system with students of a mining school.

Our study tour comes at a time of heated discussions in Poland over the country’s long-term industrial competitiveness, energy security and a reduction of fuel imports from neighbouring Russia, as well as a nation-wide debate over how to reduce toxic levels of air pollution.

Update

Due to a number of questions about our selection process, we’d like to give a little of background here:

We have received around 60 applications from dedicated and qualified journalists. Unfortunately, we can only offer 15 places on our study tour due to the fact that the Clean Energy Wire covers nearly all the travel expenses, accommodation, transportation, translation and food from its foundation-funded budget. We aim to have a mixed group of journalists from different countries, media and media formats as well as a mix of returning participants and newcomers.

Key questions guiding the programme:

  • Who is driving Poland’s transformation towards cleaner energies – is it government strategies, anti-pollution activists, clean energy entrepreneurs, or a mix of all?
  • What strategy is Poland’s government actually pursuing in meeting the country’s obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement and the EU climate policy framework?
  • What are the socio-economic implications of climate policy in Poland? In a country that still has some 90.000 coal miners, is the idea of a “just transition” more than a catch phrase?
  • What is the potential of building up new low-carbon industries such as offshore wind or electric mobility in Poland? Could they provide the alternatives to high-emissions heavy industries?

We invite journalists ...

... with a professional background in climate and energy policy to apply for participation in the study tour.

We accept applications from journalists working for media in the following countries: European Union member states, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, China, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and United States.

What about travel arrangements?

Local transport during the workshop will be organised by the Clean Energy Wire. Participants are kindly asked to organise their own travel to and from Poland. The study tour will start nearby Warsaw Main Station and will end at Katowice Main Station.

What are the costs?

Participation in the media workshop is free of charge. All expenses incurred during the workshop, including food, accommodation, and transport, will be covered by the Clean Energy Wire.

We reimburse 60 percent of applicants' travel costs (train, coach, or flight) to and from Poland. We encourage climate-friendly forms of transport such as train or coach. The study tour will start nearby Warsaw Main Station and will end at Katowice Main Station. Please indicate via the application form whether you will cover your own travel expenses. Also consider carefully whether you may be able to access any additional external sources of funding.

What languages will be spoken?

Presentations during the workshop will be either in English or in Polish. English-Polish simultaneous interpretation will be provided where necessary.

How to apply?

Please apply by clicking on Sign up in the red bar above.

What are the deadlines?

The deadline for applications is Sunday, 12 August 2018 at 0:00 (GMT+1 time).

We will be in contact regarding the outcome of your application no later than 03 September 2018.

Questions?

Don't hesitate to get in contact with Eva Freundorfer (eva.freundorfer@cleanenergywire.org) with any more questions you may have.

The study tour is organised by the Clean Energy Wire with support from the Warsaw-based energy policy think tank Forum Energii.
