Germany’s energy transition in the media on 21 Oct 2014

"Greenpeace enters roof of Willy-Brandt-House"

Activists from environmental campaign organisation Greenpeace have protested against the climate policy of German Economy and Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel at the headquarters of the German Social-Democrats (SPD) in Berlin, writes Bodo Straub for Der Tagesspiegel. Arguing that Gabriel's policy was too favourable towards lignite-fired power stations, the activists climbed onto the roof of the headquarters, also called the "Willy-Brandt-House" after the former German chancellor, and put up a banner and a digger made of cardboard, Straub says. The 18 activists also distributed a leaflet saying that shutting down coal-fired power stations was necessary to lower carbon-dioxide emissions and limit global warming, writes the author.

"Germany's green power surge has come at a massive cost"

Germany has been very fast at ramping up its power supply from renewable energy sources but consumers are paying for it through higher electricity prices and it is hurting traditional energy companies, Gert Brunekreeft, adjunct professor for energy economics at Jacobs University Bremen writes in The Conversation.

"Germany's Energiewende Proves Electricity can be Clean and Reliable"
