Facts on the German state elections in Saarland

Voters have cast their vote in the western state of Saarland on 26 March. An otherwise unremarkable campaign started to engage national politics when the Social Democrats put forward their new federal election frontrunner Martin Schulz. But Schulz's popularity in national polls did not help beat the governing conservative party CDU in the Saarland.
