Germany risks falling behind in the global race for technology leadership, including green technology, Deutsche Bank writes in a monitoring report. The report looks at Germany’s future geopolitical role in the next decade and the “post-Merkel era”. Although Germany is well positioned in terms of green technology leadership and export of competitive products, the future international regulatory framework and the success of industrial policy initiatives remain uncertain, Deutsche Bank writes. “High-Tech Made in Germany” could prove to be an overly optimistic scenario, unless the new government and companies undertake extensive reform efforts, including the right allocations of R&D resources and the broad implementation of technologies such as artificial intelligence, the authors advise. The future position of Germany will largely depend on the global role of the EU, which Germany will in turn play an active role in shaping, and is likely to continue to advocate multilateralism despite systemic rivalry between the U.S. and China, Deutsche Bank writes. Global standards such as a supranational framework for a CO2 price will remain wishful thinking, according to the report.
