Eastern German states establish green hydrogen initiative

All six eastern German states have set up a joint initiative on renewables-based hydrogen. It is intended to closely connect politics, business and science on the fuel "in order to fully utilise its great potential for the energy transition and climate neutrality," the states said in a press release. Initially, they aim to push progress among all German states to improve the regulatory framework to set up a hydrogen economy, as well as the expansion of distribution grids for green hydrogen. "If the six states consistently work together, the East could become the nucleus of a sustainable German hydrogen economy – with great opportunities for future-proof jobs, new value creation and securing our energy-intensive industry on the path to climate neutrality," said Saxony-Anhalt's energy state secretary Thomas Wünsch. The initiative was set up by Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia.
In the fight against climate change, hydrogen made with renewable electricity is increasingly considered a silver bullet for sectors with particularly stubborn emissions, such as heavy industry and aviation. Germany has set out to become a global leader in the associated hydrogen technologies, and the government has penned a National Hydrogen Strategy to fulfil these ambitions.
