Germany faces new protests against coal and for climate action

Anti-coal activists and the student protest movement Fridays for Future are planning a series of demonstrations in Western Germany in the coming days. On Friday 21 June, Fridays For Future groups from 17 countries will march in western German Aachen city centre to call for “Climate justice without borders – united for a future”. On Saturday 22 June the movement plans a demonstration on the border of the lignite mine in nearby Garzweiler. Anti-coal activist group “Ende Gelände” plans an “action weekend” from 19 to 24 June. The group has repeatedly entered the open-pit mines to force operator RWE to stop coal production. In a video posted on twitter, RWE reminded protesters that it was illegal to enter the mines, and warned they could face “danger to life” because the mines have steep walls, and the soil can be unstable.
