German e-car lamppost charging startup secures €20mio funding, Honda cooperation

Berlin e-car charging startup ubitricity has raised 20 million euros from new partner Honda and existing shareholders including French utility EdF and Siemens. “The new funding will be used to accelerate the roll-out of charge points, in particular retrofitted lamppost charge points and real estate installations across the UK, Germany, France, and USA,” the company said in a press release. “In parallel, the technology will be further developed for the mass market expected from 2020.”

Ubitricity has developed billing systems and EV charging cables that enable the upgrade of existing street lights into charging stations at a relatively low cost. They also allow e-car drivers to use their own electricity for charging – for example from PV panels on their roof. The company says it has already taken an order in London and plans to install more than 3,000 charging points in three German cities.
