Porsche and Audi ramp up production capacities ahead of e-car launch - report

VW subsidiaries Porsche and Audi are planning to ramp up production capacities for their first fully electric models in response to unexpectedly strong demand, report Burkhard Riering and Michael Gerster for sector weekly Automobilwoche. Porsche plans to double production capacity to 40,000 units per year, according to the article. Audi is currently planning to make 70,000 units per year and is also considerung to raise that target. Audi will start delivering its “e-tron” in March, while the first buyers of the Porsche “Taycan” – formerly known as “Mission E” –  should receive their cars in early 2020, according to e-mobility newsletter electrive.

“It’s hard to overstate how significant this is for Porsche,” Fred Lambert writes for EV website electrek. “At 40,000 units per year, it would become one of the company’s largest vehicle programmes after SUVs like the Cayenne and Macan […] We’re talking about a vehicle programme that would almost be competitive with Tesla Model S volumes.”
