Coal exit commission exemplary also without result ahead of COP24 – govt spokesperson

Clean Energy Wire

While it remains unclear whether the coal exit commission will present parts of its plan for the fossil fuel’s phase-out ahead of the UN climate change conference in Katowicze, the German government “can very well refer” to the general process, which tries to tackle a big issue by involving society as a whole, said a spokesperson of the environment ministry at a press briefing. Such a multi-stakeholder process inevitably leads to disputes, but the developments to date mean that the process can be considered exemplary, he said. “For the time being, I see no restrictions at all on Germany's negotiating position” in Katowice, said the spokesperson, adding that the European Union has a joint negotiating team anyways.
