The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is a research institute focusing on the intersection of environment and society and is based in Leipzig. The work of UFZ's 1,100 researchers in core subject areas such as land use, biodiversity, renewable energies, water resources and chemicals aims to inform political stakeholders as well as the economy and general public of human-environment interrelations. UFZ is primarily funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (90 percent) and the states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
