Clean Energy Wire Charter

These are the key principles guiding Clean Energy Wire's work:

Clean Energy Wire (CLEW) is an impartial hub for climate and energy journalism with full editorial independence. Our mission is to create, facilitate and support the cross-border, solution-oriented journalism needed for a faster and fairer move to climate neutrality.

We are independent from politics, business and other special interests. We base our work on facts, scientific evidence and meticulous research, and adhere to the highest standards of professional journalism:

  • We include all relevant viewpoints in our reporting and clearly identify opinions from others. We inform debates constructively and avoid polarising or divisive language.

  • We are transparent about the sources and resources we use for our stories. We attribute and credit the work of others correctly and openly.

  • We fact-check and edit our output thoroughly to meet the highest journalistic standards we want to promote. We correct factual errors swiftly and transparently.

  • As an organisation based in Germany, we adhere to the German Press Code adopted by the German Press Council (Deutscher Presserat).

Our network is made up of professional journalists who we encourage to adhere to the same journalistic standards. Our media programmes – including study tours for journalists – also provide an overview of and access to a broad range of views and stakeholders. Their purpose is to foster well-informed, fact-based journalistic work, and we encourage participants to be fully transparent about their participation.

We keep requests for our direct support service strictly confidential.

We are transparent about our funding and cooperation partners. Our core funders are the Stiftung Mercator and the European Climate Foundation.
